This is a handsome late 1800s floral brooch featuring a posy of flowers set within an oval shape with scalloped edging. Closes at the back with an extended pin and c clasp.
Sentimental jewellery was popular during the 1800s as was the language of flowers, whereby people wore certain flowers to convey particular meanings, in a rather coded fashion. Books from this period included the 1819 'Le Langage des Fleurs' by Charlotte de Latour, the 1883 'Etiquette and the Language of Flowers', and Kate Greenaway's illustrated 'Language of Flowers' published in 1884.
Hallmarks: Anchor for Birmingham Assay Office, Lion for British silver, O for the date of 1888, S. Bros for silversmiths Sydenham Brothers.

History snippet: The silversmiths, Sydenham Brothers was founded by George and Robert Sydenham who were jewellery manufacturers based in Tenby Street, Birmingham, England. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has further details on its collections website and mentions a 1913 advertisement, which describes the company as manufacturers of diamond and gem-set jewellery. Sydenham Brothers was founded during the latter half of the 1800s, became a limited company in 1910 (the year George died) and ceased trading in 1930.
